Description

Students are engaged by a newspaper clipping describing a species of eagle that is in danger of extinction. The students’ mission is to learn more about interactions in ecosystems so that they can prevent the extinction. In a simulation students first adjust abiotic factors of water and light and see how this affects the populations of eagles, rabbits, and plants. In the second part of the activity, the students change the numbers of plants, rabbits, or eagles and explore the effects on the other species. In the third part of the activity, the students try to save the eagle species from extinction as they manipulate any of the variables. This part also includes human effects on the environment such as hunters and disasters such as fire and epidemics.
